DESCRIPTION
Unattended processes need a method of notifying the system overseer when a note worthy event occurs. The event could be the completion of a designated task, shut down of a process, or an alarm reporting a catastrophic event. In the case where a pipeline is monitored event could include everything from a routine report on volumes shipped to an alarm reporting detection of a leak. Whether routine or extreme, the reports need to be reliably communicated.
Because of its low cost and ubiquity of service, Email is most commonly used for this notification. Email can be support either by a local Ethernet connection in remote applications by a Dial-up connection. While any Ethernet connection will support sending and receiving emails, sending emails with a dial-up connection requires additional system software or use of and Internet enabled modem.

The XE232NET connects directly to the serial port on the system micro-controller. It easily controlled with serial ASCII commands. The CH2166, Internet enabled modem, transmits and receives email with no special software. All control is accomplished with AT commands through the modem’s serial interface.
