CH1799A ET, Rugged Embedded Modem Module Links Power Meter. |
DESCRIPTION:
Power companies have just begun implementing wireless technologies to serve the residential smart metering market. Utilities have supported smart metering for large industrial customers for some time. For the sake of reliability a dial-up modem serves as the primary communications medium. These meters do far more than report on Kilowatt hours. The record power quality as well as power usage. The modem allows as reporting of alarm conditions as well as power usage. The modem also permits remote configuration of the meter.
Why Cermetek?
Power meters are typically mounted outside. This means the modem must operate over a wide range of temperatures and must be protected from moisture. The Cermetek tests the CH1799A ET for operation from -40° to +85° Celsius eliminating concerns that the meter will not be accessible due to heat or cold. The CH1799A ET is also a hermitically sealed module. All of the modem electronics are protected from the intrusion of moisture. These features make the CH1799A ideal for outdoor use.
You may wonder why a modem supporting a data rate of 33,600 bps like the CH1799A ET is preferred over a lower cost, low speed modem. These meters are capable of logging a great deal of data. A higher data rate reduces the amount of time the modem remains on line. This results in lower cost if a line is dedicated to the meter or less interference with other calls if the line to the meter is shared.
