Cermetek announces world’s smallest self-contained modem
The CH1788 V.22bis full function modem is a surface-mount device configured in a
68 pin PLCC format package, and it incorporates an FCC approved telephone
interface. The device is ideal for space conscious embedded applications, and
Cermetek has produced this industrial grade modem at a sub-$20 price.
Size and cost considerations are important in a range of portable
instrumentation and industrial applications, such as wearable heart monitors,
security systems, time clocks, credit verification equipment, remote telemetry,
data acquisition terminals and time-of-use energy meters.
The CH1788 offers a variety of standard features such as AT commands, serial interface, FCC Part 68 approval, low power and either 5 volt or 3 volt operation. It also supports such advanced features as; off-hook detection, 911 emergency override, DTMF detect and transmit, caller ID, and a fast connect option. “At less than 1 square inch area, about ¼ inch high and under $20 price in moderate quantities, it breaks a significant size and cost barrier,” says John Lezotte, V. P. of Sales. “Industrial temperature range operation enhances the CH1788’s applicability to severe OEM environments,” added Mr. Lezotte.

"Instead of setting up a separate dedicated network for modem-enabled products, existing Internet e-mail facilities can be used to send and retrieve data and communicate with products in the field. Now OEMs can easily add basic e-mail alert and remote status communications capability into products for about the same cost as a conventional 56K external modem."

Product design using the CH1788 is facilitated by the CH1788 evaluation board -
which includes a socket mounted sample - for $99.95. The CH1788 is priced at
$19.95 in 500 piece quantities and up, and will be available at the end of May.
