New iModem component replaces conventional modems in Internet Appliance applications
.

Cermetek Microelectronics (Sunnyvale, CA), the leader in embedded machine-to-machine communication using the internet, has announced a new third generation internet modem component. The CH2165 makes it possible for internet-enabled machines, to send and retrieve streaming e-mail of unlimited length or to send pre-stored messages up to 1 million bytes. The resident SMTP/TCP and POP3 retrieval allows the CH2165 to seamlessly access any ISP using a local access number to send and receive e-mail. This permits internet communication to be the primary source of communication in a product replacing the conventional modem. Conventional modems and their private networks need long distance access while iModems that use the internet infrastructure, like the CH2165, require local access only. Modems have varied and open-ended operating costs based on their long distance toll usage while iModems have a fixed monthly charge as little a $2.00 per month.

The CH2165 is a self contained module that is about 2.5 sq. inches and can easily be embedded in a user's PCB design. Communication to/from the host's intelligence is via the iModem's serial interface. The other port on the iModem is for connection to the telephone line. The device is FCC part 68 approved and UL listed. It is fully self contained and is controlled via macro commands which are like conventional modem AT modem commands. A free software program called iNetWizard allows the user to be walked through the set up sequence for internet connectivity. A three month trial subscription is provided to Cermetek's ISP for machines called imodem.net with local access numbers around the world.

"This new Internet modem, allows all types of products to use Internet email as the communication medium," according to John Lezotte, Director of Sales. "Instead of setting up a separate network for conventional modem-enabled products, existing Internet e-mail facilities can be utilized to send and retrieve data and communicate with products in the field and/or to communicate with people at their PC's. Using the internet has the potential to save the end user enormous sums of money in communication costs according to Mr. Lezotte.

"The CH2165 is well suited for use in data logging and in remote diagnostic equipment, in home medical monitoring systems where messages of unknown length may be involved, as well as, in alarm/alerts, and in vending machine management applications, which typically utilize fixed size messages. Additionally, the CH2165 contains a message storage capability that enables an internet connected machine to select from a menu of stored email messages to report its current status, or to simply pass emails of unlimited length between a central office and the remote machine installation. All this power is leveraged by Cermetek's iModem Network - the $2 per month machine-to-machine ISP or it can be utilized with any non proprietary ISP including in-house ISPs.

The CH2165 consists of Cermetek's proven V.90 56Kbps modem platform combined with specific intelligence to access the web. The device measures 1.97"L x 1.35"W x 0.55"H, and requires very low power from a 5 volt source.

Availability & Pricing
The CH2165 is available now and is priced at $69.95 in 1000 piece lots. The CH2165 Engineering Evaluation kit is $199.95 and is available now for delivery. Detailed data sheet specifications and application notes are available via download from Cermetek's website: www.cermetek.com.
