Xecom launches a surface-mount SocketModem® alternative
New XE5690H and XE5692H modems are less than half of the SocketModem?s size .

XE5690H and XE5692H modem Xecom, Inc. a specialist in embedded communications, today announced the XE5690H and XE5692H, Half-size modem modules. More than 15 years after Rockwell Semiconductor created the SocketModem to help sell modem chips, the SocketModem package remains unchanged. As we settle into the 21st century, Xecom has a better, smaller, more economical, surface-mount solution.

Rather than use a modem module, many designers take the time and effort to design a modem themselves in an effort to reduce cost. Since modem design and qualification can be expensive, savings from component costs need to be great enough to justify the design effort and the added pick and place costs for the higher component count. With the Half-size modems, Xecom addresses the cost issue in two ways: Prices are lower (the XE5690H is just $17 in 10,000 piece quantities) and these are surface mount modules. In modern assembly plants the SocketModem loses any cost advantage from a reduced component count by requiring a through-hole process to be employed. The 21st century demands a surface mount solution.

System designers want flexibility as to where they can position components. The smaller a component, the greater flexibility it affords. At just 1.28 square inches the XE5690H and XE5692H are less than half the size of the SocketModem (2.9 square inches). Xecom modules are also less than half as thick as the SocketModem. Being a surface-mount component helps here too, the Half-size modems require no holes that could interfere with placements on the bottom of the circuit board as there would be with a through-hole module.

?Xecom set the strategic goal of making a modem module as cost effective to our customer as a modem they designed themselves.? said Steve Clary Xecom Vice President of Marketing. ?That means not only low modem prices, but savings for manufacturing as well.?

Applications
The Xecom Half-size modems are suitable for wide variety of embedded system including Medical Devices, Set-Top Boxes, Point-of-Sale Terminals, Security and Remote System Monitoring. These modems are a RoHS compliant and feature programmable country codes to support these applications around the world.
