March 18, 2005 Internet Appliance notifies by email on AC power interruption
Cermetek Microelectronics (Sunnyvale, CA) introduces the first AC power monitoring internet appliance. The iPower Monitor is a free standing, low cost, power outage detection device that can be placed in remote locations such that a pre-stored AC power interruption email message is sent whenever AC power is lost or restored. The device notifies the user of the change in power by sending a normal email message that identifies the given location and the time of the interruption. The device is designed for industrial use to monitor locations where power outage can be critical. These include industrial processing plants, refrigeration installations, power distribution points, and critical heating and ventilation facilities to name a few. Since each monitor can be identified and is unique, a network of monitors can be constructed for a given application.
The iPower Monitor devise consists of a power detection element, internet enabled modem or appliance modem, resident intelligence and battery back. The unit operates autonomously and plugs into an AC outlet and into a phone line jack. A built in back-up battery allows it to monitor the power lines even after a power failure. When power fails or is restored the device sends an email message to a pre-stored email addresses identifying the location, time and indicating either power has failed or has been restored. The message appears on the recipient?s computer as a normal email. A built in delay in the detection avoids false alarms due to power stuttering. The email is sent via a local access number for the area in which the device is located. Local access numbers are available across the US and Canada. Limited ISP service is included in the cost of the device.
?The telephone lines will still function after an AC power fails because of the separate battery power source that powers the telephone system. This coupled with the battery back-up in the monitor allows it to send a power fail message after an outage.? according to John Lezotte, VP of Sales. ?The iPower Monitor is suited for many industrial applications were power interruption can cause a critical situation if prolonged. The beauty of using an internet appliance is that no special communications infrastructure is needed to use it, just plug them in and they send emails to your PC.? according to Lezotte.
Each iPower monitor comes preprogrammed with a user selected email address for the message destination and a local access telephone number in the local area code of the monitors intended installation location.
