Xecom today announced the release of the XE2420
A complete 2400 BPS modem in an inexpensive, miniature sealed, surface-mount package .

First surface-mountable, complete modem
* Just .955" by .955" by 0.29" high
* Under $20 each in 10,000 piece quantities


The hybrid PLCC (HyPLCC) package meets customer needs of small size, low cost, and surface-mountability.

Priced under $20 in volume, the modem is useful for remote monitoring applications in industrial, commercial, and residential locations.

The XE2420 consists of modem controller, ROM, analog front end, and telephone line interface (or data access arrangement) circuitry all in one device.

Small Size
The 24-pin HyPLCC package fits a 68-pin PLCC footprint at just .955 inches square and 0.290 inches thick.

The sealed unit is protected during assembly and board cleaning operations.

Low Power Consumption
The XE2420 consumes 330 mW of power in operation.
In power down mode it consumes less than 1 mW.

Features
The new modem features control and configuration via industry standard AT commands.
The complete integrated Data Access Arrangement circuitry (DAA) includes ring detect, loop current holding circuit, and hook switch.
UL60950 recognition and FCC Part 68 Registration are user transferable.
Data transfer occurs at 2400, 1200, and 300 bps using V.22bis, V.22, V.23, V.21, Bell 202, Bell 212 A, and Bell 103 protocols.
The XE2420 includes hooks to attach external line features.
These features permit unobtrusive sharing of a local telephone line.
The status of the shared telephone line is monitored through the addition of simple circuitry, preventing the modem from interfering with a voice call.
This added circuit monitors the telephone loop voltage when the modem is not in use.
The system host checks the status of the telephone line before initiating a call.
The Handset Interrupt (911 Interrupt circuit) monitors the loop current while the modem is in the off-hook state.
When a handset is lifted or a shared telephone line engaged, the system host can abort modem connection to permit the user to complete the call.

The market for low speed modems continues to thrive because of the need to add communications to embedded systems which collect only small amounts of data," according to Steve Clary, Vice President of Marketing at Xecom. "The XE2420 provides these manufacturers with a low cost modem solution which is easily integrated into their system."

The XE2420 single-chip modem is available for under $20 each in 10,000 piece volumes.
