DESCRIPTION
Maintaining the Greens and Fairways of a championship golf course requires intelligent use of watering systems. Sophisticated irrigation systems utilize a sensors and a system controller to monitor the needs of the course. The course is divided into zones and a cluster controller is connected to all of the sensors in the Zone. The cluster controller passes sensor data back to the system controller and collects the system controller’s instructions for the irrigation pattern. But how do you get the information to and from the system controller?
There are lots of communications technologies available. You might immediately think of wireless solutions, but the hills and trees common to the courses effectively block the RF signals. Surprisingly the reliable old modem gets the call here.

The Cermetek CH1786A has proven to be ideal for this application. The CH1786A provides 2400 bps data transfer between the System Controller and Cluster Controller. The short connection time at this data rate makes it the most efficient speed for communicating small amounts of data. The CH1786A is also fully encapsulated. The encapsulation provides a hermetic seal from the elements which is important since the Cluster control has to set out on the course.
